Dear Straw Bale Enthusiast,

My name is Andrew Morrison, I am a contractor specializing in straw bale building in Southern Oregon.

I have been building straw bale homes for many years in Southern Oregon.

When I first started building with straw bales there were no good designs for what are called "baling needles". These are the tools you use on the baling site to re-tie straw bales and sew welded wire mesh to the straw bale walls. They are an essential tool, believe me!

When I first started out we used rebar, steel rods with holes drilled in the end, and whatever we could find on the job site to push baling twine through bales.

I think I still have the scars from all the blisters, scratches, and cuts I endured in those early days.

I kept thinking that there must be an easier way to do these essential jobs on the straw bale building site. A way to cut down on the time they took and the toll they were taking on our bodies.

You See, A Bale Needle is a Required Tool
for Building Any Straw Bale House

  • You cannot retie straw bales without it.

  • You cannot sew mesh to walls without it.

  • You cannot build your straw bale house without it.

I thought, There must be a better way

One night I sat down and drew the design for what I thought would be the perfect straw bale needle. A needle that could hold a couple of pieces of baling twine, a needle with a sharp point so it could be pushed through a bale almost effortlessly, and a needle that was comfortable on the hand.

Basically a needle that would make the job of re-tying straw bales and tying mesh to the bale walls take less time and basically make life easier for my baling crews.

For months I worked closely with Keith Armstrong, a specialty tool maker for the contracting industry, to come up with a design for the perfect straw bale needle.

He would make me a needle and I would give it to my crews. They would give me feedback and I'd go back to Keith. This cycle continued until one day the crews told me we had the "best darn baling needle on the planet".

No blisters, no wasted time, just bale walls that seemed to go up almost effortlessly.

The word got round that my crews had the best tools available. Since then people ask me to make the needles available to them. Unfortunately we cannot make the needles for you. The cost of steel and the difficulties of shipping 2 feet of sharpened steel spikes across the US and overseas make this prohibitively difficult.

I talked to keith Armstrong and asked whether we could create detailed drawings of the needle design he came up with and make it available to our customers and readers.

Between the 2 of us we came up with:

The Ultimate Straw Bale
Needle Design Package

So, What's included in the Straw
Bale Needle Design package?

  1. A complete set of design drawings giving you all the details you need to get this incredible tool made for you. (These are currently being revised and you'll receive them in an e-mail as soon as they are ready)

Andrew's Complete Straw Bale Needle Design package is the cheapest way for you to get a set of baling needles.

Questions and Answers with
Andrew Morrison

Question: Are baling needles just used to re-tie bales?

Answer:. No, a set of baling needles has many uses around a straw bale building site:

  • The needles can also be used to thread electrical wires through a bale.... Adding an exterior plug or light location can now be done with ease.

  • If you are using exterior pinning with bamboo, you can also use the needle to sew twine through the bales.... No more having to work around the bamboo while baling.

  • You can use the needle to thread twine through the bales when added strength is needed for a small bale after the bales have been installed..... Sometimes it is hard to know that a bale will be weak until the wall is complete. Having to remove the bales to get to the weak link is a drag. Tying a weak bale in place may be the easiest solution.

Question: How do I get my needles made for me?

Answer: Take the design drawings to your local metal shop and they will be able to fabricate a pair of needles for you at a third of the cost it would take for us to make them for you. The drawings were created by Keith Armstrong and are the exact specifications for the needles I use on my job site. Any decent metal worker will be able to make the needles for you.

"Andrew:  Thanks so much for making the DVDs.  My husband and I have learned much from them. Seeing the procedures was so much more clear than just reading about them in a book.  Your work was meticulous and your words were precise.  Keep up the good work.  You've done a lot for SB enthusiasts."

-- Kathy Wells

"I wish I would have had access to your materials before I built my last straw bale project."

-- Trevor

"Andrew, I have just about every straw bale book I can find and they are very educational, but being able to watch someone actually do each stage of the building process as they are teaching makes all the difference.  I am currently building a Post and Beam Infill and was planning on contracting someone to do the stucco(very expensive) until I read the information about and ordered your plastering DVD.  Thanks a million."

"Andrew, Thank you so much for your weekly straw bale lessons or Straw bale Minute. I have had an interest in alternative building methods since I first got introduced to them in 70's. I've acquired some land in Arkansas and can't wait to start building Straw bale structures beginning with a workshop, then a house.   When I heard how fireproof straw bale construction is compared to stick framing I decided I can safely have my blacksmithing shop inside.  Thanks again for your willingness to share your knowledge & experiences with us all."

-- Dean Hutchins
Mammoth Spring, Arkansas

"Strawbale.com, and all of the amazing resources found there, is the reason I started seriously considering building my own straw bale house in the first place. Your videos on Foundations, Straw Bale Construction, and Plastering provided the kind of step-by-step information that this straw bale novice needed to understand the process and to have the confidence to dive into my own project. I can't wait for the next video on Load Bearing Straw Bale."

"Hi Andrew  I've been thinking about building a straw bale home for several years and collected a vast number of tips.   Nothing came anywhere close to the package you were putting together on your DVD. So incredible complete and comprehensive, I have thrown most of my collection out. Your disk is all one needs to go from slab to rooftop.   I almost gave up my initial dream of building a load bearing construction - fortunately I don't have to do that now... "

-- Chris Bschaden
Charleston, New Brunswick, Canada

"Of the three Straw Bale DVDs I've invested in so far, Andrew's was by far the most informative.  He doesn't skip any of the steps and gives good detail on how to go from foundation to the finish coat of plaster.  I feel like I could complete a small project on my own based on what he's taught me.  Thanks for continuing your efforts to educate people about the wonders of straw bale construction!"

-- Melissa Roberts
Burnsville, North Carolina

"I never realized just how easy it was to build a beautiful straw bale home!  Your videos helped me understand that building with straw is just as easy, if not simpler, as traditional construction and the wonderful, heavily insulated, thick walls are built in!"

-- Christopher Hyer

"I was very impressed with the thorough job on foundations.  I am starting my home building project in April 2007 and this information is extremely valuable and timely."
